2010 Federal Election

With the announcement that the 2010 Federal Election will be held on Saturday 21 August 2010, REIA, together with the state and territory Real Estate Institutes have developed an election campaign which aims to highlight to the Government, Opposition and Independents key areas that require action.

Your role in the REIA 2010 Election Campaign

As a member of the real estate profession, you can play a very important role in this campaign by assisting REIA in lobbying the Government.

You can assist REIA in calling the Government to action on issues identified under the heading 2010 Key Areas for Action below by writing or emailing the Government, Opposition, Greens, Independents and your local Members of Parliament.

Having your say will mean playing an important role in bringing key issues to the attention of the Government in the lead up to the 2010 Federal Election.

Below is a list of key email addresses to assist you in getting started.

REIA's submission to Government

The Real Estate Institute of Australia (REIA) has put forward a proposal to political parties and independent senators, requesting support for a comprehensive housing policy.

The areas that we are looking for action on are:

  • The First Home Owners Grant (FHOG)
  • Housing affordability
  • Mandatory disclosure of energy efficiency ratings
  • National property taxation framework
  • The Foreign Investment Review Board (FIRB) Guidelines

Tips for writing successful lobbying correspondance

A letter is the most frequently used method for communicating with public officials. Parliamentarians pay close attention to their mail because they know that your vote and support can be won or lost by the response you receive to your request or enquiry. Letters are also the quickest and easiest way for you to become involved in the political process and to begin building a quality, long-lasting relationship with Members of Parliament.

When writing to Members of Parliament, this list of suggestions will improve the effectiveness of your letter:

  • The most effective letter is a personal letter, not a form letter.
  • Clearly identify yourself by including your name, return address, date, phone number.
  • Use proper titles of address for Members of Parliament.
  • Keep your letter brief and to the point; one page typewritten is best.
  • Each letter should address only one issue.
  • Briefly explain your position in a factual manner, avoid philosophical and emotional arguments.
  • Be clear in telling your Member of Parliament the result you favour.
  • Never be rude or threatening.
  • Follow up with a letter of thanks if your Member of Parliament responds as you requested.
